How the Easter date is worked out
Western Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring (after 21 March), so between 22 March and 25 April. The date comes from a calendar rule fixed in 1582 with the Gregorian calendar; the calculator uses the same algorithm (Gauss / Meeus), so it is exact for any year.
The days around Easter
- Good Friday: 2 days before (a public holiday in the UK, Germany and many other countries).
- Easter Monday: the day after, a public holiday in most of Europe.
- Carnival: Shrove Tuesday is 47 days earlier; Lent starts the next day.
Orthodox Easter
Orthodox churches follow the Julian calendar and their Easter often falls one or more weeks later; the calculator shows the Western (Catholic and Protestant) date.

Frequently asked questions
When is Easter Monday?
The Monday right after the Easter Sunday shown by the calculator.
Why doesn't Easter have a fixed date?
Because it is tied to the spring full moon, which falls on different days each year: that is why it moves between 22 March and 25 April.
Is the date reliable for future years too?
Yes: the calculation uses the official Gregorian calendar algorithm, valid for any year.
